Finding Optimal Nutrition

Learn More @ FoodnSport
Since November 2010, I've been on a health and nutrition journey to heal my asthma that has plagued my athletic potential since the age of 4. After many changes, many mistakes and many lessons learned, I came across a high carb, high fruit, vegan lifestyle this past spring; however I didn't do that right either! But since mid July, when I finally sat down and read the book, I learned exactly what I needed to do to make this lifestyle work. Since then I've experienced incredible changes in my performance and general health. Yes it is too short a time for me to act as a representative of this lifestyle, but if you are interested you should learn more yourself. Watch Dr. Graham's short video now.

Creating art through blindness

Courtesy of Wired.com
What makes one great? Is it a verb-based living? A thought-induced existence? A moral-boosting fairytale? Perhaps it is in doing want you love, becoming a master of it and then sharing it with the world.

Hal Lasko reminds us of how important it is to master one area before moving onto the next. Only in the long run will a whole picture then come into focus.

When Dreams Collide by Ian Ruhter

Living in a bubble of comfort is not living. It is surviving.

At BIKES, we aim to inspire a pursuit of one's dream goals but that doesn't mean it is always going to be flowers and champagne.  It will a long uphill battle that, at times, seems to have no end. But if you are living in that moment, does it matter how big the hill is?

When Dreams Collide from Ian Ruhter : Alchemist on Vimeo.

What is work, what is play?

Arman Assadi: Why I left Google
I am often asked how I pay the bills...surely I must have another job. Like a job that I hate. A job that makes it possible to do the one I love. There must be something "holding you down". Something that makes it all work. So what is it?

I confess...I'm a coffee-addicted lion

"Whip cream?....do it"
So to kick off the weekend and the official beginning of autumn here in BC, I have a two fun videos for you to enjoy. The first is another stunning musical collection of rhythms from multi-instrumentalist Kishi Bashi. It is 18 minutes so if you are making breakfast, it is a great length to set an awesome atmosphere while you chop, cut and stir.

The second video is a hilarious expose on the apparent founder of the raw vegan diet, David Wolfe. Wow..I loved it! Wait...are we coffee-addicted deer-placenta eating lions after all?

Real Music...Wow

Emily Wells.
Multi-Instrumentalist
 Website
The racing season is over! That means I have time to find and share cool stuff with you all! This absolutely stunning video of musician Emily Wells is right off of Sammy Jay's blog but it is too good to pass up. Her multi-instrumentalist talents are superb and this 2008 performance encompasses everything you can imagine as 'real' music.  If you don't think it is impressive, get better headphones!

I wish performers like Emily were the super famous ones.

Be real. Be awesome. Enjoy

The Literature on Creationism, I mean Creativity

"More productive my..."
It seems that each afternoon, when I rummage the courage to boldly venture 'where no one has gone before', the galaxy of social media, it seems like I'm always dodging black holes of disinformation and surfing away from supernovas of 'the next greatest thing'. #cornball fryer.

My recent favourite is the cosmic catastrophe that is the seemingly endless bombardment of interstellar gamma rays from the "being more productive" universe. Really people? We have some pretty amazing tools these days. Perhaps the answer is: in an iconic, monotonous and mechanical police officer tone (not to be misinterpreted as Hal)... "Put down the phone and step away from the caffeine...DAVE". Truth is that everyone knows what works, it just feels so good to pitter the day away...right? I mean honestly, who doesn't love monkeys?

If you ain't scared...you're not doing it right

Coyle on Fear
It's the big game, the big race. The pressure is on and it seems the whole world is watching your every step, or every misstep that is. Walking up to sign in or warming up on the court, sweaty palms and nervous tummies. Those back-of-the-mind gremlins that you've kept bottled up all season are thumping at the door, waiting for the right high-tension moment.  The coach calls a pre-game rally, spelling out in spitted-English just how critical it is that if "you aren't scared you're going to throw the whole season, then you're not doing it right! And winners do the right things, so get out there and get nervous!".

'Brand' New Movie

Video coming at'cha!
Morgan Spurlock has been putting himself in difficult situations to garner your attention and hopefully your reflection for a while now and his latest project has already created a huge buzz at the annual spring film festivals around the world. His latest movie aims to shed light on the power of branding and its place in modern society. Interestingly enough, my SmartStop Mountain Khakis Pro Cycling teammates are also working pretty hard on putting together small shorts throughout the year in the hopes of creating fun and exciting content without becoming overly redundant sponsor-pluggers.

Divine words for a Monday

Science is Madness FB
Divine words from Science is Madness (Facebook). Rock in a bottle, sand in a bottle type of outlook. Are you holding onto an necessary burden. Have you yet to forgive or process a past experience? Take a moment, this insight may prove helpful.

"A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied, "The ......

Ice Cream is better than yogurt

Link
There is a lot of scary stuff out in this crazy world we live in. I'm going to take a moment today to share some quotes from a recent New York Times exposé on North America's food industry. The comments that struck me the hardest were those of a General Mill's representative at a 1999 meeting where food industry leaders from all of the top selling brands refused to decide upon changes to the ingredients of their most popular products despite their own personal admissions and concerns about the real threat of obesity and ill-health among consumers. "But we are in Canada Ben, we have better regulations". Well unfortunately it doesn't work like this.

Cholesterol

Not your ordinary vegetable superheroes
So as most of you know, I've spent the majority of my post-graduation and non-cycling time studying nutrition and the human body with the hopes of better understanding the differences between alternative and western medicine. The whole cholesterol thing are actually pretty old hat if you've kept yourself up-to-date but since I know there are many distractions in our lives I wanted to pass along some great info as this is a fundamental element of many different types of cardiovascular disease.

To Infinity & Beyond

Music
Have you noticed a growing social-media emphasis on the Aurora Borealis?? Well if not, let's get you back up to speed! Aurora & Spacestation. Where is this growing interest coming from? Any ideas??

Is it that camera technology has finally caught up with our modern day's expectations of video resolution? Perhaps these images were just never made available before.  Do the aurora represent one of the 'missed' landscapes of natural photographers and artists of the 20th century...is there a niche left to be captured?

What is so compelling about the collision between charged solar particles and Earth's atmospheric gases? Why do we keep staring and studying this musical dance? Maybe because it's one of nature's most intricate and complicated art forms, synthesizing patterns so diverse that scientists have only learned little compared to other scientific areas of study.

It's da bomb!
Fortunately the CSA, NASA, and the ISS have recently teamed up with the University of Calgary's AuroraMax initiative to provide live HD streaming for skywatchers around the world. Most recently, "ISS astronauts Don Pettit and Dan Burbank will be on standby for the next six weeks to photograph the Northern Lights for AuroraMAX, a public engagement initiative dedicated to promoting the science and the splendour of the aurora borealis".  U of Calgary NEWS LINK.

IWILL Helmet Awareness

January 30th UPDATE:  Whistler Blackcomb New Regs

A good friend of mine, Canadian cyclocross superstar Aaron Schooler is out to promote your health and the health of your family with his new ProHelmet campaign, IWILL.  After his brother's tragic snowboarding accident in November, Aaron has put aside his riding aspirations and made big waves all across the country.

The province of Nova Scotia, Intrawest Resorts and many ski resorts in Alberta have already changed their regulations in support of this cause.

If you are interested in supporting Aaron's message, follow and 'like' IWILL on Facebook . Thanks for wearing your helmet! You never know when you'll need it.
